About the Games

Sufficiently Advanced and Sorcerously Advanced are a pair of tabletop roleplaying games. They both run on the same diceless engine. Both are speculative fiction games: the first is set in a distant technological future; the second in a fantasy universe full of magic.

SA and Sorc are both games of of exploration and political machination set in universes where everyone has nearly godlike capabilities at their disposal — and the world wasn’t destroyed by it. Both games are about worlds truly changed by what is possible, not merely our familiar world enhanced.

Sufficiently Advanced reaches for the outermost limits of what we think is achievable. Grounded in hard science, but speculating incredible advances, SA looks at a future in which nanotechnology, computing, medicine, and other fields have advanced to the limit of our current understanding — and just a bit beyond. It’s a look at what these technologies might do to the world and what societies might form around them. It is a game about responsibility and the drive for a better future. It is a game fundamentally about humanity, as well as some of its descendants.

SA is about technology as far beyond what we have now as we are beyond the cavemen. It's about a cultural milieu created by the dregs and lunatic fringe of the 21st century. It's about the line between freedom and chaos. It's about trusting that someone who knows and changes the future is keeping a place for you in it.

Sorcerously Advanced differs from SA (and from our universe) in fundamental ways. It is set in a universe where magic is real, and sorcery takes the place of technology. Moreover, it is set in an ascientific world, where math and science cannot fully describe the world and physical laws have exceptions.

Sorc is every bit as transhuman as SA, with magic altering forms, guiding minds, and imprinting on the literal souls of the people. Magic there is younger than technology in SA, prone to flare-ups and side effects, yet still an inextricable part of life. You'll find not only shapeshifting and weather control, but the worlds-spanning Travel lattice, the Universal Repositories that encode knowledge for future generations, and the broken Spinners who tie the soul to the world.

Where SA is the story of humanity in all its forms, and the thousand things it might become, Sorc is the story of all sentient beings.
