I was wondering how to adequately deal with maintenance needs of 3+ Capabilities in extreme situations when a character is away from (high-tech) civilization, such as an explorer, outdoorsman, or spacer on a low-tech or wild planet or in deep space.
Biotech: you have to build a small special-food factory to produce enough high-efficiency food.
Chronotech: if the idea is adopted of the maintenance need being time spent realigning and cleaning up your apparatus, not a problem, you just need some free time.
Cognitech: if you are cut off from the infosphere and you haven't a friend around with higher Cognitech or you are cutting-edge, tough luck (in high-tech societies something must be in place to deal with the needs of cutting-edge Cognitech people; perhaps Cognitech 6 AIs ?). I suppose your familiar might help here, but if you have high-end Cognitech, not even a Scout could be of use. I'm uncertain whether you could ever set up a local revetech service all by yourself.
Metatech: not a problem if you got someone to chat to, otherwise tough luck. I am uncertain whether to talk with your familiar would work since Bonsai or Scouts may or may not be too alien in mentality from humans to help. Serviles probably do not qualify since they are not truly sapient.
Nanotech: not a problem, you just need some free time.
Stringtech: not a problem if you are on a starship. If not, you have to build a small power plant to produce enough electricity.
In both Biotech and Stringtech cases, I assume creation of a personal infrastructure base to satisfy maintenance needs would be a Biotech or Stringtech Engineer project, perhaps with an additional Nanotech requirement. If it is possible to create a local revetech service all by yourself, for Cognitech it would be a Cognitech Engineer project, perhaps with an additional Programmer requirement. I assume these projects would be Minor in type.
