Lililth's Brood
This is essentially about first contact between advanced aliens and a more primitive humanity. The aliens mean well but they don't understand humanity as well as could be desired. The same is true of the humans. The trilogy serves as a good model for what happens when an advanced civilisation encounters a cargo cult or old world with the attendant missteps, power differentials and trauma. The Oankali of the book are quite alien, inhuman although not inhumane, and odd but could be mistaken for a Star Dweller faction.
