Welcome to the Masquerade! Where everyone appears as they choose, each unique and each defining other's perceptions of them by their current appearance, if only for a little while. And yet, for all of our diversity, consistency does have a purpose. When you enter a store, you'll want to identify the people who work their instantly, so you can ask for help. More importantly, police officers should be instantly identifiable, both so they can easily exert their authority, and to make them easy to find in an emergency. And yet, even our police must have their anonymity.
Sliding out of character now…. My solution on the world of Aurora was simple enough. Police have a uniform only in the vaguest sense, strict enough to make identification easy, but lose enough to allow individual expression. In the case of Auroran Police, the uniform is white with blue stripes (a particular shade of blue). Where the stripes are, how thick, and other details are left to the individual officer. The police vehicles are similarly varied, all white and blue but each unique.
