Born to a high ranking family of the Disciples of the Void, Masaaki Jin grew up as privileged as one can get among the Disciples. He also grew up with a privileged view of the internal theological politics of the Disciples which turned to rebellious cynicism in his adolescence. During that time, Jin began to run with a bad crowd. Before long, his parents sent him to an Anchorage known for reforming among the worst of the Disciples. There, he learned to keep his head down, parrot the appropriate phrases and lie like a rug. Once free of the Anchorage, he decided to visit the Universe of Noise.
He spent several years in the Glorious Stardwelling Armada honing his abilities and learning to be a competent spacer (he also experienced the void which is a story unto itself, not unlike Brer Rabbit and The Briar Patch). He's spent time in the Independent Worlds and among the Spacers, working as a 'consultant.' What he consulted on ranged from article retrieval to courier duty to intimidation.
The Spacers though, they caught him (that attention to detail of theirs) and he had to work off his crime with them (learning to be an able Null Ball player and fan), where he had a change of heart (any resemblance to a mid-life crisis is entirely coincidental) and deported him from their ship. He still talks to his counselor and members of his cohort from those days.
At loose ends, he made his way to the Patent Office and to his surprise, they hired him.
