The Replicants produce a number of unique challenges to other cultures that develop around them, but the one great challenge is dealing with them in times of war. While the physical resources to start a war are relatively easy to come by, skilled and trained manpower is always a problem, even in the modern world.
The problem is simply solved by the Replicants, but one Replicant collectively named Vi Dominia (known to the Tao of History as “Them”) solved it elegantly. Using a combination of cellular reconfiguration, group-mind technology, and paracognitive semiotic processing, she developed a way for a single person to become more than just an army, but an unending army.
The principle has been repeated by the Replicants many times with some variations, but the basics are always the same. A single Replicant (usually collectively rejoined to be a single individual) is “backed up” to source. An instance of that Replicant is then produced with a number of changes.
First is a neural transmitter, essentially like that of a group mind. This transmitter is genetic and produced by the cellular tissues of the revised Replicant. The Replicant’s reproductive organs are removed in favor of a parthenogenesis “gland” that lays a plant-like seed that grows into a cocoon, eventually forming a new individual (who will be imprinted with the group mind as they develop).
They also have an organic mesh as part of their organics, to handle the interplay and enhance their ability to process the potentially gargantuan amounts of data they will be handling. These will include lenses that perform automatic datamining on the reams of data that come filtering in, finding the most relevant data and making it known to the individual.
The end result is an auxonic army that coordinates perfectly (since they all share one mind repeated over and over again) and can replicate itself nearly infinitely (so long as raw materials exist, and raw materials occur every time one of them dies). The entire combat force will function as a single organism, the right hand always knowing what the left hand is doing. Techniques of command and control become obsolete in the face of this perverse application of the technologies of civilization and society.
Tech Level: Bio 5, Cogni 6, Nano 4. The major difficulty lies in the lens for data processing, but note that other technologies will generally be installed organically into the body in order to facilitate survivability and combat capability, so StringTech will generally be needed. Note also that while being a Replicant isn't technically required, the Replicants and the Union are the only ones who would find any value to this technology, as most view it as sickening and perverse.
Cost: Low for the initial modification, but the cost for any military augmentation as well as the resources to maintain such an army can get abusively expensive.
Descriptors: Auxon, inheritable.
