Biogenesis is the most advanced form of tissue engineering, which speeds up the process by using nanomachines to rapidly assemble cells into tissue and organs. Biogenesis is more costly, but about 4 times faster, taking weeks rather than months. It manufactures a wide variety of designer organisms, ranging from living toys like the skullcats to human like bioroids.
Biological Androids (“Bioroids”)
Bioroids are humanoid beings created using biogenesis. Most of the parts are biological, but some are not. For example, a polymer or carbon composite scaffolding is often left in place as the frame on which the was built. Deeper differences from the human norm will be apparent if their cells are examined. Baseline bioroids are designed to accept artificial chromosomes, with “slots” into which genetic engineers can easily plug specific modules of genes. Much redundant “junk DNA” material, such as transposons, is left out of bioroids. Bioroid tissues typically also contain clusters of nanfactories that produce special proteins that the couldn’t take the time or code into the genes, or which compensate for their other shortcuts.
The basic bioroid design is similar to an upgraded human, but with major differences including an upgraded immune system and reduced sleep cycle. All bioroids are sterile (though some female models can serve as surrogate mothers). Many have transgenic modifications that are similar to parahumans, but often more extreme, tailored for a particular occupation.
OK, in a nutshell, bioroids are a form of artificial life, made of artificial organs and tissues assembled over a synthtetic skeleton. This includes a brain. Its then trained using intensive VR and training. In most of the THS setting, they're considered indentured mniors - indentured to the corporations that created them and minors, thus without all the rights of an adult (and if you think this is bad, check out the rights of SAI and uploads in places), which isn't even getting into the controversy around combat or pleasure bioroids. And bioroid designs range all over the place - combat, hazardous waste disposal, pleasure, specialized labor, security, cognitive enhanciles, hostile environment, medicine and on and on.
Anyway, assuming one wants to move away from artificial slave race(s), what could one do with this in SA? At the least they'd be a 3rd set of artificial aliens - its just that these are biological and can compete with humans for resources. That suggests competition and conflict to me.
They're at least as viable as the Mechanicans with their technological requirements for reproduction.
And to pin it down for folks (read: opposition) that just have to own a sapient being, or facilitate the reproduction of a daughter species that humanity owes an obligation.
And yes, it seems it works out that they are in the reach of upper limit Cargo Cults. I didn't try to do it that way.
