Wormholing in, the team found (what was in effect) the Patent Office embassy with a corpse in the study. The local agent's head had been removed with a monofilament. The Logician, who was police officer (by which I mean his responsibility was dealing with non-Logicians in Logician space) and the spacer started a forensics and hacking sweep, realising towards the end that the agent had a meeting to discuss a patent violation related to replication with the local Replicant Judge who ran the colony. In ten minutes.
They had the meeting and started to realise that things were pretty complex here. People had multiple instances, and recombined. Out - and in - character a whole series of debates sprung up on the whole question of replication and were they the same people. The key fact that they established out of the meeting was that the DNA of the likely murderer was from a replicant murderer currently sentenced to work on the mines of Anin II as a single instance for a considerable time.
Subsequently, they were alerted to the fact the replicant's body had been found in the complex with the replicators and the wormhole generators. As they crossed the city, they realised that although the records stated 2000 people lived on the colony, there were substantially more. Then the penny dropped and they realised that the numbers refered to 'prime' instances. At this point comments on the lines of 'Toto, we're not in Traveller now' started to appear. Anyway, they found the body, examined it and found that stringtech had been implanted in it that generated monofilament and had shredded the killer. The data in the AI and replicator indicated that this was the prime instance.
The team persuaded the Judge to agree to a visit to Anin II, so they wormholed to the station about the world, which was really nasty, hot and toxic. They were greeted by the warden, who turned out to be running all the staff via multiple instances. Paranoia started to set in on the AI as they realised that as the killer was also present on the planet surface, the AI must be involved to allow him to bypass his lockdown to a single instance and single location.
Part of the team (the Masquerader, Golem and Roamer) went to the surface to talk to the Warden down there and interview the killer. The Spacer and the Logician remained on the station but started to try and break into the systems and find out what the AI had planned (and narrowly escaped death by a replication machine - which I based on a Airport Metal detector - being placed behind a door they were due to pass through (instant death cut scene). Kennedy and Stalin started planning how to interrogate the Warden.
On the surface, the Golem when into the toxic section to interrogate the killer with the other two watching one when he realised that all the instances were the same and he could be in severe danger. Simultaneously, the AI tried to overwrite the mesh of the Masquerader as she tried to hack the AI, and she managed to break the conflict and survive, with (if I remember correctly) a twist leading to an impasse. The team on the station started to get very, very worried as the replicators powered up and started to generate multiple clones of the killer. They started trying to destroy the clones.
Meanwhile, the AI started a coup attempt in the 3 to 4 systems that it had overwritten the wormhole and replication facilities, with citizens being forcibly shoved into replicators, and only brought out with a mesh and control program overwritten into them.
Somehow, the impasse was forced into an agreement with AI to let the team wormhole out provided the Patent Office would not intervene, and they fled back the Patent Office HQ to find that multiple systems had 'disappeared' from the wormhole comms network in Replicant Space…
And that was where we left it!
