I'd sent this separately by email as well, and Colin responded as below. I'd got it wrong again!

//Typically you don't make rolls with Stringtech in physical combat.

To use your example: you roll 24 on Nano & Soldier, beating your
opponent's 18. You deal 2 Reserve damage by default, plus 2 more
because the gun says so. Your foe has Stringtech 6 and you have
Stringtech 10 for damage, which means you deal +1 reserve damage for
being three or more points above your target's String score (the
"Force score" rule on pg 102). Total damage is 5 Reserve.
//

So, for the extra damage, do you recalculate the roll you made using the String 10?

An example revisited:

//My Stringtech 4, Nanotech 4, Soldier 5 Patent Inspector gains an anti-matter gun (p133) from a colleague with a more advanced civilisation to use in an attack on a patent violator. The anti-matter gun is a Stingtech 7 weapon that has an Energy Descriptor, and is stated as doing damage at Stringtech 10, with an extra 2 points of reserve lost because of the explosion.

He rolls his nanotech and Soldier in his physical attack, getting 4x6 = 24 and 5x3 =15, taking the 24. His opponent rolls his Stringtech 6 and Police 2, getting 6x3 = 18 and 2x9 = 18, so the contest is initially won. The opponent looses 2 reserve, plus an extra 2 for the explosion. Recalculating the winning roll with Stringtech 10 gives 10 x 6 = 60 = 2 extra reserve lost as 2 multiples higher than the opposed roll. Hence a total of 6 reserve is lost.//

Q4. Is that right? If not, can you give an example back?

Q5. If so, I take it I substitute the stringtech damage for the Soldier related roll if that is the one I use?

(Realise the energy transparent comment was silly now I read it. It was late at night. Looking at the descriptors again I see that there are none that obviously block each other.)

Thanks for clarifying that. So, if do a subtle attack with an Ad Campaign, my opponent's counter attack must also be an Ad Campaign until they know that I'm attacking…

The book doesn't explicitly say, but I would rule that the target gets stuck in whatever conflict the attacker desires until they realize they're in a fight.

The defender does not suffer any penalties.

Use your Nanotech for the attack roll, but Stringtech is still the "Force" score for that conflict and the gun's String (10 for this purpose) will determine extra damage. Should you actually need to roll Stringtech for some reason, and are using the gun, roll the gun's String.

The sheild doesn't negate the attack, it's just effective against it. The descriptors don't work as a rock-paper-scissors kind of system, they're more about applicability.

(And actually, an energy-transparent sheild would be completely ineffective against the attack, because of the weapon's Energy descriptor. Energy attacks just go straight through it. Your target had better have some other countermeasures or he/she will be sucking gamma rays.)

A few more questions about Technology…

I'm not 100% clear how technology works as a game mechanic. I understand the Capabilities of the character reflecting how much tech they are augmented with, but I'm not certain how the technology section integrates with the Conflict section.

An example: My Stringtech 4 Patent Inspector gains an anti-matter gun (p133) from a colleague with a more advanced civilisation to use in an attack on a patent violator. The anti-matter gun is a Stingtech 7 weapon that has an Energy Descriptor, and is stated as doing damage at Stringtech 10, with an extra 2 points of reserve lost because of the explosion.

Q. What capability would be used in a roll? Would it be the natural Stringtech 4? Would it be Stringtech 7, the governing tech level of the weapon? Would it be stringtech 10 (the damage of the weapon)? Should they be using Nanotech (as per conflict table) when they are attaching?

Q2. What does 'Doing Damage at Stringtech 10' mean? My understanding is that the only way damage is measured is either in reserve loss or as a complication from spending a twist to get out of things?

Q3. I win my roll against my victim, who turns out to be wearing an energy transparent shield, which negates the anti-matter gun's attack. Does this mean that the base 4 reserve the other player would have lost is ignored as if it happened (ie if you know someone has a descriptor which kills your attack you needn't bother rolling, just find a twist to screw the shield)?

I'm sorry if these are really stupid questions.

Cheers,

Dom

OK, some more questions (2 weeks before I run the game and I'm trying to finish things off).

Tell me more about Subtle Conflicts…

1. Does the defender (in their unknowing counter attack) get to choose what the conflict is, or must they match the conflict they are engaged on? eg if it's an Ad-Campaign, is their counter attack an Ad-Campaign, or can they shift to another conflict for their response?

2. Does the defender (in their unknowing counter attack) suffer the -3 penalty on their profession and capability ratings?

An example would be really helpful.

Thanks,

Dom

I'd definitely like to see it! We can post it here on the wiki under Game Aids.

To work with someone else, roll when they do. Here's how it works:
1. Highest total roll sets the benchmark.
2. Everyone who gets within half of that roll adds +1 to what the highest player rolled on her dice.
3. Spend Reserve as normal.

Example: Three people roll to program a digital environment. They get (6x5) 30, (7x6) 42, and (2x7) 14. The 42 is the highest roll. The person who rolled a 30 helps, but the 14 doesn't because the other two people spend too much time fixing his mistakes. The (7x6) 42 roll becomes (8x6) 48.

The GM can decide to cap out the number of helpers - a "too many cooks" ruling.

Working through building my crib-sheet (which is for me and the players) and I've another question which I can't see an obvious answer to.

Q. How do you assist another player in a conflict?

If you want, when I've completed the cribsheet (which will probably be no more than 3 landscape A4 sheets so I can fit it in a Savage Worlds generic screen), do you want me to share?

Cheers,
Dom

Thanks Colin!

Aside from that, I've not run across anything that has foxed me yet. My next step will be an extended crib sheet / screen type affair for prompting myself. Thanks for posting the draft conflict guide as that will be very useful!

Dom

Hello, Dom! Welcome to the forums.

Those are some good questions. I should clarify those in the rules.

A1: Just the stat with the zeroed-out reserve. If both are zeroed, you have a -1 penalty to each die roll, not a -2.
A2: Unless both sides agree to a quick roll-off, I'd go with the full extended conflict.
A3: Yes. Initiating a short-term conflict can bite you in the ass if you don't win it.

—Colin

If anyone could answer these questions, I'd appreciate it. I'm hoping to run Sufficiently Advanced at Continuum in August and I'd like to get the rules right in my head;

Q. If a character's reserve reaches 0, do both their capability and profession suffer the -1 roll penalty, or just the capability?

Q. When a secondary (shorter timescale) conflict is initiated, is it a full extended conflict?

Q. If the person who wins the shorter timescale conflict is not the person who initiated it, do they gain the 4 reserve?

Thanks!

Dom
