Sure!
On "divide and conquer": it pays to go after a small percentage of your main target group. If you can take out 10% of your opponent's forces a couple times in a row, and avoid retaliation, you can whittle them down to size and take them out more easily.
On teamwork: Normally you can have other people add to your total when they help you, up to doubling your score. This falls into the "2-10" range. If you have, say, eight people helping you against one guy, you still get only double your score. However, if you have twenty people, you fall into the next category, and can quadruple your score.
Example: A Mechanican with String 8 gets bum-rushed by The US Army, with String 2. The Army is tens of thousands of people, whereas the Mechanican is 1 person, so the Army would get a x32 bonus. However, they cap at x4 because only so many of them can go after him at once. The Army thus starts off even with the Mechanican.
Yes, twenty String-2 people have the same chances against a Mechanican as twenty thousand String-2 people. He's not going to tire out or run out of inversion beam. The army may have nukes, but the Mechanican will spot them coming and shoot them down, or maybe even detonate them early. It makes sense for the conflict to be much longer with the Army, but they have no better chance of winning.
